Martyn, Henry

Martyn, Henry
(1781–1812)
   Missionary.
Martyn was born in Cornwall, and was educated at the University of Cambridge. As curate to Charles simeon, he was encouraged to offer himself as a missionary. In 1805 he was appointed Chaplain to the East India Company and he initially settled in Calcutta. He is primarily remembered for his translation of the New Testament and the Book of Common Prayer into Hindustani. Later he travelled to Persia to work on his Persian New Testament translation. He died at the early age of thirty-one in Toket, while returning from Persia. The pathos of his life story and his intensely spiritual journals caused him to be regarded as a religious hero in England.
